South beats Brooke

Matthew Hale ANY ROOM? — Brooke’s Dalton Valero (far right) looks for room during the first half of Friday’s 65-19 win by Parkersburg South at the Erickson All-Sports Facility.

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg South coach Mike Eddy had been high on his defense and special teams coming into Friday night’s contest with Brooke, and the players backed his words up with deeds.

The Patriot defense held the Bruins to negative 31 rushing yards and intercepted Brooke quarterback Logan Williams three times, and Tyee Gibson blocked a pair of punts — both of which led to short-field touchdowns — as South kept Brooke winless, 65-19, on homecoming night at the Erickson All-Sports Facility.

It seemed as though both defenses might be in charge in the early going, as the game’s first three drives ended in punts. However, late in the first, South found the scoreboard via the aerial route. On a third-and-9 play from the home 26, Patriots’ QB Brandon Hall connected with Nick Yoho along the left sideline for a 22-yard gain. The next snap led to Hall again firing to Yoho, this time down the right side. The sophomore eluded a couple of tacklers, and sprinted past the defense for a 52-yard scoring catch. Yoho added the PAT himself, and South led 7-0 with 1:38 remaining in the first.

The first big special teams play came at the end of the next Bruins drive. After the Patriot defense held, Brooke punter Austin Provenzano stepped back to punt with the ball at the Brooke 30. Gibson burst through the line and emphatically swatted his kick to the ground.

South took over with the ball at the Brooke 7, and required three plays to score. J.T. Kemp plunged through from a yard out for 13-0 lead. The Patriots went for two and got it, Hall’s pass being caught in the right side of the end zone by Kemp.

It was 15-0 with 10:42 remaining in the half, but Brooke seemed to steal the momentum back immediately, after South’s only special teams breakdown of the evening. They got their lane assignments right, as Brooke’s Chris Yachini appeared bottled up at about the 30, but he broke a couple of tackles and burst down the right side for an 85-yard touchdown return. Their two-point try failed, and it was 15-6 with 10:25 left in the half.

Brooke then held the southsiders to a three-and-out, but a superb 43-yard Yoho punt pinned them back at their own 7. After a sack forced them back to the 6, they were forced to punt the ball back away.

The Patriot defense sacked Williams five times for 38 yards lost in the game.

The hosts made it a two score game with a methodical six-play drive, Brant Freeland finding a big hole to cash in with a 14 yard TD run. Yoho’s kick was good to make it 22-6.

A short Brooke punt gave South the ball inside the Bruins’ half, and PSHS took advantage for another score. Hall broke free for a 30-yard run to the Brooke 9, and Kemp needed only one play to convert the red-zone opportunity. Yoho this time ran the ball in for two, and the halftime score stood at 30-6.

The Patriots received the second-half kickoff, and scored on their first play from scrimmage. Hall found Gibson wide open on a wheel route down the right sideline, and his throw caught him in stride to race 64 yards to paydirt.

Hall was an efficient 6 of 8 through the air, for 151 yards and three TD’s.

The Bruins answered on their next possession, gaining 57 yards through the air in a seven-play, 66-yard drive which ended with Williams finding Yachini in the right corner of the end zone from 6 yards out to cut the deficit to 37-13. Williams was 12 for 25 passing for 166 yards in the game, with Yachini accounting for seven catches and 103 stripes.

The Bruins went for an onside kick and got it, then pulled another touchdown back. Williams completions of 15, 12 and 16 yards took the ball to the Patriot 1, and Alexander Edgell bulled in for the six. The two point conversion pass failed, and the score stood at 37-19 with 6:32 left in the third.
