Weir falls at home to Keyser

Michael D. McElwain THROUGH THE PILE — Weir High’s Cody Enrietti somehow breaks through the Keyser defense for a touchdown Friday night at Jimmy Carey Stadium. Kesyer scored two late touchdowns to escape with a 28-14 victory. Weir heads to Petersburg Sept. 24.

WEIRTON — It took Keyser a while, but it finally figured out the tough Weir High defense and began exploiting the perimeter as the Golden Tornado scored 22 second-half points to upset previously unbeaten Weir High by 28-14 last night at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

The Golden Tornado (3-1) were led by junior quarterback Brady Ours, the son of former West Virginia University fullback, Wes Ours, who ran the football for 76 yards and two touchdowns and threw it for 126 stripes and two more scores.

Keyser made a big turnaround in the second half after being held to just 16 first half rushing yards and 65 through the air. Three Red Rider turnovers including back-to-back fumbles in the final 2:13 of the game sealed the deal for the Golden Tornado.

“They (Keyser) did some things we weren’t able to do,” said veteran Weir High coach Tony Filberto, whose club dropped to 3-1. “They were able throw and catch the ball and we didn’t do that and they were able to run to the edge and we weren’t able to do it.

“If you took it as a tackle-to-tackle football game, we did better than they did, but they were able to throw the ball and run on the perimeter and we weren’t able to do that.

“Tonight they were better than us. That’s a good football team We played great defense and moved the ball well in the first half, but we got ourselves into some uncomfortable situations offensively that we weren’t able to overcome. Maybe we’ll get to see them again later on.”

The two teams battled toe-to-toe until the final 3:05 of the first half. That’s when Weir High turned the ball over on downs at the Keyser 44. Ours took over there completing a 30-yard pass to sophomore Reggie Redman and three plays later found Redmond open in the end zone on a 13-yarder.

The kick attempt for the extra point was blocked, but the Golden Tornado went to the halftime with a 6-0 lead.

Keyser coach Sean Biser said after the game injuries have plagued his squad.

“We didn’t have anybody left,” he said. “I have two starters I left at home and several kids dinged up. We had three freshmen playing on defense and one on offense. Our kids showed a lot of resilience and heart.

“They just came out and played the best they could against a really good football team.

“Early on they (Weir High) were really ramped up and plugging the holes. We just found some things. We were able to really do some nice things blocking on the edge. You could tell they were sitting on Brady (Ours) trying to take away our read game so when you take on thing away you have to open something else and that’s just what we did.”

Biser said the Keyser passing kept them in the game.

“I think we had less than 20 yards rushing in the first half,” he said. “It was bad. I think we can throw, but it’s not what we do. Hats off to our kids for making the catches.”

The Red Riders struck back on their first possession of the second half. After forcing a Keyser punt, Weir High began a scoring drive at its own 37. The Riders covered the 63 yards with seven plays capped by a 19-yard burst up the middle by senior Cody Enrietti. Keyser blocked the Michael Mills extra point kick leaving the game tied at the 8:01

mark of the third period.

But Keyser answered on the next possession starting at its own 47. They marched the 53 yards in 11 plays, which included a Weir High interfererance penalty. The Golden Tornado scored on an Ours to Camden White pass that covered 16 yards.

White is the Keyser placekicker and he lined up as if to kick the extra point. Instead the ball was snapped back directly to him and he found a wide open Jacob Biser in the end zone for the two-pointer that gave the Golden Tornado a 14-6 lead.

The Red Riders had a quick response of their own after sophomore Chad Custer ran the ensuing kickoff from his 14 to the 36. A long drive that took 12 plays and nearly six minutes to complete ended with senior Domenick Murphy blasting into the end zone from a yard out.

Cody Enrietti, who ran the ball on eight of the 12 plays, barreled into the end zone for the two-pointer that tied the game at 14-14 at the 9:22 mark of the fourth quarter.

Enrietti had another big night in the loss gaining 176 yards with 29 carries.

“We knew Enrietti and Spencer were great football players,” said Biser. “We knew one of them was going to get their yards, but we just played good assignment football to keep Spencer in check. Enrietti did a heck of a job. I mean at 6-3, 215 pounds he’s a heck of a load especially against my little 150-pound middle linebacker.”

Keyser made it 20-14 on the next possession putting together another long drive of 78 yards. Junior wingback Christian Ravenscroft keyed the drive running sweeps of 23 and 30 yards. Ours went the last two yards for the score on a keeper over left tackle.

A pass failed giving Weir High hope as it started another drive following the kickoff. Spencer got loose for 25 yards, but two plays later Keyser forced a fumble.

The Weir High defense forced a Golden Tornado punt that was short and downed at the Red Rider 40, but on the second play from scrimmage, the Riders turned the ball back over to Keyser with another fumble at their own 45.

Senior Terrell Bush rushed for two yards and Ours called his own number on a sweep around left end that covered 43 yards. Ours capped the win with a run for the two-pointer with 1:59 left in the game.

The Red Riders play Petersburg on Sept. 24 in a 4 p.m. game.
