Guest column/Support local businesses in challenging times

Our local businesses have spent the past few weeks facing odds unlike any other time in recent history. They have had to adapt, be patient, be innovative and stay positive, looking for ways to stay afloat while keeping customers safe and happy. To someone who has never owned a small business, it may seem easy. But it’s not at all. And the tenacity and spirit that they have shown and continue to show, is nothing short of amazing.

The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, like many of the more than 4,000 chambers across the country, felt overwhelmed and helpless as the COVID-19 pandemic grew and began to take its toll on businesses, large and small. The only way we knew how to help was to gather and disburse up-to-date information and resources to our local businesses and get the word out, loudly and consistently, about those who were able to safely remain open. And we continue to work on this every day. More than ever before, the chamber feels like the team and the family that it’s meant to be. Competitors are working side by side, and businesses from every part of the county and across the river are sharing information and ideas. A constant flow of phone calls and e-mails is coming into our offices every day, many from longtime members we’ve never talked to or met. Everyone has been reminded of our similarities as local residents and business people, and our differences seem to have faded into the background.

Nobody knows what the “other side” of this situation will look like. But if ever Jefferson County and the Ohio Valley needed an all-hands-on-deck approach to tackle what lies ahead, it’s now. And if we can take anything positive away from such a sad, scary time, I hope that it’s a renewed passion to work together, support our local businesses, continue to improve and grow our community and never take “normal” for granted again.

Please continue to support your local businesses during this challenging time when you can do so safely and responsibly. If you are a small business in need of assistance, please contact the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce offices at (740) 282-6266 or visit our website at www.jeffersoncountychamber.com for a comprehensive list of helpful resources.
