Levies need city support

To the editor:

I am writing to you today and asking for your support to vote yes on Issue 1, Proposed Municipal Income Tax, (0.7 of 1 percent.)

This is for the continuation of an existing 0.7 percent of 1 percent levy on income for street improvements and equipment, parks and recreation, capital improvements and the general fund for a period of five years

Vote Yes on Issue 2, Proposed Municipal Income Tax (0.3 of 1 percent.) This is for the continuation of an existing 0.3 of 1 percent levy on income on which 85 percent is to be used for the payment of salaries of municipal employees and 15 percent for the improvement of streets within the city of Steubenville for a period of five years.

These two levies have never been increased and have stayed the same since their creation in 1986 and 1981, respectively. During this pandemic this administration and employees have kept our costs down so we could properly maintain the services for our citizens.

These two levies are an integral part for the stability of the city of Steubenville finances to provide the necessary services to our citizens. During this past year our crime has been down and we had to start our own ambulance service without using any general fund revenue. Also, during this pandemic, all city services were maintained: Water, streets, sanitation, utility billing, building, engineering, wastewater, finance, police, fire, parks and recreation and support staff.

No employee had to be furloughed during this pandemic and city services were maintained.

Now it’s time for the citizens of Steubenville to step forward and vote yes to Issues 1 and 2.

This is what makes a city when both government and its citizens work together.
