Democrats take the low road

To the editor:

First there was CHOP/CHAZ, the “peaceful” autonomous zone in Seattle that the mayor called “A Summer of Love.” It was eventually dismantled after violence erupted including murder. Now there are weekend riots in Seattle and other cities including Oakland, Sacramento, Austin, Louisville and Minneapolis. There have been riots in Portland every night for more than 60 days. These are not peaceful protests, but riots in which objects are thrown at police officers and buildings burned and vandalized. Many small businesses, including businesses owned by minorities, have been destroyed in these cities. Mayors of these cities have refused federal assistance to help control these riots. Federal assistance has been sent to cities to protect federal buildings such as court houses. These federal officers have also been attacked. Because they wear special protective equipment, Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls them stormtroopers. U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler was asked about Antifa, which has been at the forefront of many of these riots. He stated Antifa violence is a myth.

Every weekend there are shootings and murders occurring in Chicago. Many young children have been murdered while playing in their yards or riding in the family car. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has refused any federal assistance even though Chicago police organizations have asked for assistance. In response to the violence, Lightfoot has taken police officers out of their districts to protect her residence.

Funds have been stripped away from the police in New York City. A special anti-crime unit has been disbanded. There have been many retirements of seasoned police officers because they do not feel supported by the mayor and city administration. Violent crime has increased in New York City.

The First Amendment of the Constitution gives “The right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances,” not to riot and vandalize.

Gov. Gavin Newsom in California has declared that church is non-essential. The governor of New Jersey has waged a war on the owners of a gym. He has used every tactic that he can to keep the gym closed, including having the owners arrested. There have been no positive COVID-19 cases linked to that gym. A couple in St. Louis stood outside their home with firearms after a mob broke through an iron gate and walked past their home shouting threats to the homeowners. The homeowners did not fire their weapons at any time. Their weapons were confiscated, and they were arrested on some trumped-up charges brought by the district attorney.

What do all of the above have in common? All of the political leaders in these incidents are members of the Democrat party. The Democrat party claims to be supportive of minorities and the underprivileged. They claim to support small businesses. They criticize President Donald Trump and others in his administration. Pelosi recently called Attorney General William Barr a “blob” and the president’s “henchman” after he testified before a congressional committee. Will this be the norm in our country if Joe Biden is elected president?
