Journalists fill critical roles

To the editor:

We the people should always recognize the power of a free press. Fact-based news reporting informs us and reveals important truths about our communities. It helps us understand civic life, from school boards and city council meetings, to national elections. It enables us to speak truth to power about the issues that matter most.

A free press underpins democracy, uncovers stories that expose injustice and corruption, fosters knowledge for holding the powerful accountable and cultivates space for dialogue and participation.

Journalists elevate our humanity through storytelling. They inspire individuals to come together, celebrate heroes and identify opportunities to engage across differences in ideas, politics, arts and culture.

In sharing this belief, let us come together today — and every day — to protect journalists and defend a free press for all the ways they touch our lives.
