Thanks for keeping flags flying

To the editor:

The Toronto Beautification Committee would like to thank all those who contributed to the Mayor Wilson Flag Fund for 2018.

We’d also like to thank the Herald-Star and correspondent Julie Stenger for publishing the article describing the need for donations, which helped bring in contributions that otherwise may not have been made.

The fund was begun by former Mayor Bob Wilson following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. More than 100 flags have flown above Franklin, Third and Fourth streets and at the gazebo since then.

We buy American-made, good-quality flags. However, since they’re exposed to the elements, they do weather and require replacement after a while. Thanks to city Service Director Alex Porreca and city crews for removing and replacing the flags.

The flag fund was nearly depleted until the generous contributions of businesses, organizations, residents and former residents this year.

A framed certificate with the names of donors and those they honored by their contributions is now hanging in the entrance way of the Toronto municipal building.

Thanks for keeping the flags flying.
