Golf event helps the United Way

The Weirton United Way continues its year-round work to assist the community this weekend with its annual fall golf tournament, and we’re sure it will be another successful event.

Teams of area golfers will take to the fairways of Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course Saturday morning to assist Weirton’s major charitable organization in its efforts to raise funding to support several local member agencies. This is the second fundraiser of the United Way’s calendar, and is one of the major events of the year, often with a full roster of golfers and support from throughout the community.

Among this year’s sponsors are Serra Village Retirement Community; Starvaggi Industries; Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort; First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union; James White Construction; and Caveman Basketball.

We thank them and all the other sponsors for helping to make sure the tournament has another successful year.

This is the Weirton United Way’s 85th year of operation. This community has always stood behind the organization as its officials and volunteers work to support the community.

Everything raised by the Weirton United Way stays local, with its 12 member agencies including the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities West Virginia, Community Bread Basket, Dunbar Recreation Center, Healthways Inc., Hancock/Brooke/Ohio/Marshall Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Hancock County Sheltered Workshop, Hancock County 4-H Foundation, Mary H. Weir Public Library, Salvation Army of Hancock and Brooke Counties, Weirton Medical Center and Weirton Christian Center.

Each agency provides a valuable service to our area which might not be available without assistance from the United Way and its supporters.

As the Weirton United Way’s 85th campaign gets under way, we encourage our residents, if they are able, to find a way to show their support. Our community remains strong as long as we are united.
