5K remains a staple of summer

A tradition summer event for our area is still set to happen this week, although some adjustments are being made in consideration of current events.

The Marland Heights 5K, organized each year by the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, has become a focal point of the summer season for many of our area residents. This year’s race will be held Friday, beginning and ending at Marland Heights Park, featuring the title 5K, a 2-mile fitness walk and run and the youth races.

We know some will be concerned about participating in such a community event; however, organizers have been working to take precautions, including the use of staggered starts with groups of 20 to 25 in order to cut down on crowd size. Race participants will receive pre-wrapped food items, and there will be no after-race picnic and awards ceremony as in previous years. Masks will be required before and after the race, and the event will be using multiple areas of Marland Heights Park to encourage social distancing.

Early registration ends today, but there will still be an opportunity to register at the park prior to the beginning of the races.

We thank the parks board for working to bring at least a little bit of normalcy to our communities this summer, and also must thank all those who have supported this year’s race, including major sponsors Tri-State Pharmacy, Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Starvaggi Industries and Tomtreyco DBA McDonald’s. Without them and other sponsors, the race wouldn’t be possible.
