Reading program a boost for area
A literary journey over the last few weeks will come to an end Friday at Weirton Elementary, and we hope it has been an enjoyable experience for the youth, faculty and families who have taken part.
This year’s Read With Me Weirton program kicked off at the school Jan. 31, with the more than 900 pupils each receiving a copy of the Beverly Cleary book “Ramona Quimby Age 8.”
During the last few weeks, there were reading tasks, fun activities, guest readers and more focusing on the story, but with an even bigger role than the usual school work.
Read With Me Weirton is designed to encourage families to spend time together while improving literacy skills.
Pupils are given a reading log, and asked to invite their parents, siblings or other family members to read along with them. Members of the community also get involved, with area businesses showing their support by posting signs in the storefronts and providing prize tickets to any youth who visits with their copy of the book.
School assemblies celebrated the program’s conclusion, where prizes and other goodies were presented.
We, again, thank Weirton Elementary for organizing this worthwhile program for their pupils, and the community for showing its continued support of the school and our local children.
