Area communities ready to light up

The special glow that comes with the Christmas season once again will be seen as communities across the Tri-State Area hold their light-up events.

Those evenings help to create a sense of joy and anticipation as they bring residents together to celebrate and enjoy a festive atmosphere where camaraderie always is on display.

Celebrations began Sunday night in Weirton, when the fourth-annual Light the Night Tree Lighting was held at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Included was the unveiling of the third edition of the Success in Unity tree ornament, this one honoring the Greek heritage of area residents.

Historic Fort Steuben Park at the corner of Third and Market streets in Steubenville will see the return of holiday magic Tuesday.

The city’s Nutcracker Village and Advent Market will open at 3 p.m., with Steubenville Lights up the Night activities set to begin at 4 p.m. It’s a chance to visit the expanded display of nutcrackers that are gaining attention around the country, enjoy hot dogs and treats courtesy of the Steubenville Beautification Committee and take in a performance by the Brenda Casey Dancers at 5:45 p.m. in the Berkman Amphitheater. All of that will lead up to the official lighting of the city’s Christmas tree at 6:20 p.m., which will be followed by a fireworks display, which is being presented in memory of the late Terry and Bob Kloska.

Toronto also will be celebrating Tuesday, when the city’s annual light-up event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the gazebo. Officials with the Toronto Coalition for Revitalization, which sponsors the evening, remind area residents that the event also helps members of the community — proceeds from the sale of luminaria that will be on display will help the Toronto Salvation Army provide money to help pay the utility bills for low-income families.

Wellsburg’s light-up ceremony will be take place following Friday’s parade.

In Mingo Junction, meanwhile, the plaza near the Municipal Building will come alive with the spirit of the holiday at 6 p.m. Dec. 2, and Follansbee will hold its traditional light-up ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 9.

We hope you will participate in the festivities as our area once again shines with the spirit of the holiday season.
