Another special football weekend
For many fans of area high school football, it doesn’t get too much better than this weekend.
While Ohio’s teams are entering the second week of playoffs, the area’s West Virginia squads are ready to open post-season play.
Oak Glen and Weirton Madonna will begin their second seasons this weekend. The Golden Bears will open Class AA playoff action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when they host Wyoming East (8-2.) It will be a special game — Oak Glen is coming off a 10-0 regular season and will be playing the first home playoff game in the school’s history.
The Blue Dons, meanwhile, will open Class A playoff action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when they travel to West Union to take on Doddridge County. Madonna finished its regular-season schedule at 6-3-1, while the Bulldogs are 10-0.
Both teams are beginning a journey they hope will lead to Wheeling Island Stadium and a spot in the state finals. For the Golden Bears, the Class AA title game is scheduled to be played Dec. 6. For the Blue Dons, the Class A title game is set for Dec. 7.
In Ohio, meanwhile, Indian Creek will continue its march toward a Division III state title when it meets Poland Seminary at 7 p.m. Saturday in Salem’s Reilly Stadium. The Redskins stand at 10-1, while Poland stands at 9-2.
We wish all of the players on all three local teams continued success this year as they work their way through each state’s respective single-elimination tournament.
Fans in our area love their football, and that means there will be a large turnout of local support at all three games. Even more important, fans of the other area schools will be on hand at each game to lend their encouragement.
No one knows right now how this weekend’s games will turn out. With that said, we wish our area teams well in this year’s playoffs.
