W.Va. training session important for firefighters

We rely on the skills and training of our firefighters to protect us, our families and our homes in the event of structure fires, vehicle crashes and even medical emergencies.

It is a dangerous job and requires them to be on the top of their game and to undergo years of training.

During the next few days, Weirton will be hosting more than 100 professional firefighters from around West Virginia as they work together to learn from each other and enhance their skills. The Professional Firefighters of West Virginia Training Conference will begin today with a business meeting and social gathering at the Holiday Inn, followed by two days of training.

Training during the conference will focus on truck company operations, fireground survival, engine company operations and vehicle extrication. Sessions will be held at two sites in Weirton — the Weirton Fire Department’s training center on County Road and Starvaggi Memorial Park — and one in neighboring Paris, Pa., at the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department’s training center.

We welcome West Virginia’s professional firefighters who will be visiting our area this week.

We wish you all well in your training and thank you for your constant vigilance as you work to protect your communities.

We also thank the members of Weirton Firefighters IAFF Local 948 for bringing the conference to Weirton and showcasing what our community is all about.
