Marland Heights race a tradition
It is a summer tradition for Weirton.
In its 23rd year, the Marland Heights 5K Classic is both a competitive race and a community event, bringing together athletes of all levels, as well as families.
This year’s race is set for Friday at Marland Heights Park, and whether you are a seasoned runner, a beginner or just someone who wants to get in a bit of a walk, we hope you will consider participating.
There is still time to register, either filling out an application at the Millsop Community Center this week, or showing up prior to the race Friday evening.
Races begin at 6:30 p.m., and will include the youth fun run, a two-mile fitness walk and the namesake 5K.
This year’s major sponsors are Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, McDonald’s and Starvaggi Industries, with additional support from First Choice America Federal Credit Union, Tri-State Medical Group, Galloway Law Offices, Sheetz, Weirton Lumber Co., Hancock County Savings Bank, Studio L, FOP Lodge 84, PS Marketing, Graphics in Print, Shop ‘N Save, Dee Jays, Riesbeck’s, WesBanco, Montina Corp., Fox’s Pizza, Dairy Queen, Village Pharmacy, Next Level Athletics and Cedar One Realty.
The event will include a screening of the film “McFarland USA,” following the race, as part of the Movies in the Park series organized by the Weirton Parks Board.
The Marland Heights 5K truly is something for the community, with many showing up each year to take part or just to cheer on family and friends.
We thank all of those participants, as well as organizers and sponsors, for continuing to make this a successful event, and we look forward to another great race.
