Weirton’s Park Drive project moves forward

Efforts are moving forward in what promises to be Weirton’s newest commercial, and possibly residential, development.

In recent years, much has been said about plans for the proposed project along Park Drive in the Three Springs Business Park. The 72-acre site has sat vacant for years, but plans have shown proposals for retail, light industrial and now even residential projects on the land.

On Monday, Weirton Council approved a resolution to begin a streetscape project, which, once finalized, will see new streets built into the development, along with landscaping and other design efforts.

The plan first must receive support from the West Virginia Division of Highways, but this is good and, we’re sure, welcome news for Weirton residents.

Once the streets are complete, attention then can turn toward getting buildings constructed and then, hopefully, bringing businesses in.

Area developers had been talking for quite some time about the possibility of retail business, and maybe even a hotel on the front 10 to 12 acres of land. In recent months, discussion also has been had about having apartments built on top of the retail buildings, which would help increase the local housing stock.

The remaining property has been eyed for light industrial, possibly office space and more.

It all means jobs for our area, and that’s never a bad thing.

It has taken years to get to this point, with work by many individuals, but we are glad to see this benchmark reached, taking us this much closer to the finish line.
