Area concerts touch all genres

The outdoor concert season has arrived in the Tri-State Area, and whether you are looking for a particular style of music and performance or just want to kick back and relax on a late spring or summer afternoon or evening, you will have plenty of events to choose from during the next several months.

The shows are getting started during this long Memorial Day weekend.

Music returned to the Weirton Event Center Friday, when the Fantasys, one of the region’s most popular bands, opened the Concerts Under the Stars series. Concerts will be held each Friday through Aug. 23, with the exception of July 12. Gates will open at 6 p.m., and music will start at 7 p.m.

Aracoma Park in Mingo Junction will come alive with music beginning at 6 p.m. today when the Moonwalkers take the stage. It will be the opening performance in the village’s concert series, which will continue through Aug. 25.

The Historic Fort Steuben Concert Series will open with special Memorial Day performances by Phil Dirt and the Dozers and the Grand Old Oldies. A Memorial Day recognition will be held at 6:30 p.m. before music gets under way at 7 p.m. in the Berkman Amphitheater, located at the corner of Third and Market streets in Steubenville.

After the opening night, music shifts to Thursday evenings through Aug. 1, with a three-act presentation featuring Flashback, the Joe Scalissi Dean Martin tribute performance and Beatlemania Magic set for June 15 as part of Steubenville’s Hometown Celebration.

Monthly Monday Music Madness comes to Follansbee at 6 p.m. Memorial Day with a performance of the 294th W.Va. Army National Guard Band. The series will continue on the last Monday of every month through August.

The Chester City Park Concert Series, meanwhile, opens at 6 p.m. Tuesday with a performance by the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Live music will return to the corner of North Third and Market streets in Toronto beginning July 3, when the Tri-State Community Band and Keith Williams perform at the Gazebo. Wednesday concerts will continue through the summer, with the final event set for Aug. 29, a Thursday, to coincide with the town’s all-class reunion.

While this is not a complete listing of concerts scheduled for venues across our region during the next several months, it helps to demonstrate that area communities are working hard to provide a way for residents to sit back and be entertained.

Our region’s concerts offer shows that accommodate just about every taste in music. From rock to soul, the Big Band sound to oldies, adult contemporary to country and bluegrass — there’s something for everyone.

It’s all possible thanks to groups of dedicated volunteers in each community who work hard to book shows and maintain the venues, as well as the businesses and individuals who sponsor each of the events.

Thanks to their support, there’s not a charge to attend any of the performances.

We hope you’ll be able to get out and enjoy the warm weather and listen to music the way it was meant to be heard — live.
