Bill helps protect infrastructure

When talk turns to infrastructure, many people think of roads, water and sewer services, and little else. But there is much more to it.

That is why a bill approved by the Ohio state Senate is important. It is SB 250, sponsored by Sen. Frank Hoagland, R-Mingo Junction.

Hoagland’s bill provides enhanced penalties for those seeking to damage or destroy infrastructure in Ohio. Part of the measure’s importance is that it recognizes the full scope of infrastructure — everything from roads to electric power stations, from farms to telecommunications facilities.

Hoagland’s fellow senators recognized the bill’s importance, too, passing it by the wide margin of 23-5.

Members of the state House of Representatives now will take up the bill. They, too, should approve it and send it to the governor for his signature.

Our lives depend on a complex infrastructure network that ensures we are fed, kept warm in well-lit homes, are able to travel to work and, in short, enjoy all the necessities we and our families require.

Protecting that infrastructure is vital.
