Applefest shines with Wellsburg

A tradition that has brought residents of the Tri-State Area together for many decades will be renewed for the 40th time this weekend.

It’s the annual Wellsburg Applefest, which will run Friday though Sunday on Charles Street and the Wellsburg Town Square.

The festival celebrates the town’s connection to the Grimes Golden apple and the legendary Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman, and there will be plenty of apple goodies available. From pies to fritters to apple butter and cider, the event continues as a tribute to all things apple.

One of the reasons the festival has remained a staple of autumn is that it has constantly refreshed its lineup of activities. Among this year’s additions will be a live painting contest for all ages and a children’s category to the All Things Apple baking contest.

Returning will be many traditional activities, including the marketplace, where those 15 and under can sell a variety of items; the pumpkin decorating contest; many food and craft vendors; carnival and pony rides; a pet show; the crowning of the winners of the festival pageant; and a long schedule of bands, solo acts and dancers, who will perform on the town square throughout the weekend.

Thanks to a group of hard-working and dedicated volunteers, the festival has been able to thrive. We hope you’ll plan to attend — it’s a great way to spend an early fall afternoon or evening.
