JOSEPH SMARRELLA

Joseph Francis “Slugs” Smarrella, 81, died peacefully at Lancia nursing home on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Joe, who many knew as Slugs, was born to his parents Helen and Joseph Smarrella in Steubenville, OH where he resided his whole life. He was preceded in death by his parents (Helen and Joseph) and brother, Phillip. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Barbara (Gryszko), daughter Jennifer (John) Scalzo, son Joseph, and son Jeffrey (Meghan). He was Papi to Anthony and Vincent Scalzo of Charleston, WV; Sagan and Saige of Steubenville; and Benjamin and Nora of Verona, Wisconsin.

After graduating from Steubenville Catholic Central High School, he began working at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel. He also joined the United States Army Reserves and served for 6 years. During his 42 years with Wheeling-Pitt, he was an active member of United Steelworkers Local 1190 and served many years as the treasurer for the union. He also participated as a board member for the Jeffersonian Lodge Italian Village and Ohio Valley Credit Union. His extremely strong work ethic was complemented by his love for his grandchildren and enthusiasm for their numerous sporting activities both near and far.

His family would like to thank the Lancia Villa Vista Nursing Home for their dedication and care of our Papi. The compassion of every nurse, aide, and administrator was felt throughout his stay of 3 years.

Visitation will take place on Friday, July 25 from 10 am until time of Mass at 11 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made in his name to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 852 Main St., Wintersville, OH 43953.
