GEORGE BABINCHAK

George M. Babinchak, loving husband, father, and grandfather of Weirton, died peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2024, at the Whitetail Springs Memory Care Community in Whitehall, PA. He was 94-years- old.

He was born in Weirton, WV. on October 29, 1929, one of four children to Michael and Elizabeth Reba Babinchak.

George retired from the former Weirton Steel after over 40 years of dedicated and faithful service, and was a 1947 graduate of Weir High School.

He held memberships in the Weirton Steel 25-year club, the Weirton Knights of Columbus, and if you were looking for a friendly conversation, you could find him tending bar as he had for many years at the Weirton Moose, always willing to oblige.

George remained to the day enormously proud of the home that he built, everyone knew him as “Mr. Fix-it.”

George very much enjoyed his social life, speaking with anyone he met. His bowling night was no exception, looking forward to the camaraderie that he and his friends developed and looked forward to the next time they were together. While at Whitetail, George would often sit near the front of the room, greeting guests as they arrived for their activities, and was recognized as the facility’s unofficial “Walmart” greeter. He and his warm daily reception of his fellow residents will be missed.

He and his wife Mary enjoyed their trips to the Amish Country and spending time watching their family grow. They both had a great love for their family devoting their time and energy to spending time with them and making all who had the honor of being a part of their lives as happy and as enjoyable as they could.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Greer Babinchak, who sadly passed on Sunday, February 9, 2012; daughters, Edda Gunning and Diane Bommer; brothers, Michael and Andrew Babinchak; and sister, Mary Sisinni.

Those who are left behind to share in his memory and love for all are his daughters Rachel (Kenneth) Houston of Arkansas, and Lisa (Steve) Stickley of Coraopolis; grandchildren, Ryan Matuska, Heather O’Connor, Natalee Day, Dillon Stickley, George and Patrick Gunning and many nieces and nephews.

Friends can visit George’s family on Wednesday, April 3, from 4-7 p.m. at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, at Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, 229 California Ave., Weirton.

Fr. Bill Matheny will preside.

Interment will be in Saint Paul’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in George’s honor to Commonwealth Hospice, 4955 Steubenville Pike Suite 125, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.

Following George’s committal service, a luncheon will be held at the Loyal Order of Moose, 3967 Main St., Weirton.
