James McElwain

JAMES Thomas McElwain, 86, passed quietly in his home on Friday, January 22, 2021, in Toronto, OH.

James was born on November 11, 1934, to Thomas and Catherine Gallagher McElwain of Weirton, WV. He grew up in a loving family with his seven sisters, Kathleen Wallace, Helen Crosby, Mary Alice Schmitt, Theresa McIntosh, Margaret Tombow, Suzanne Mason and Judy Andrews Pinyot. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in Steubenville, OH, and became a machinist for Weirton Steel Corporation in Weirton, WV.

He met his wife of 60 years, Adrienne Streba, through a local boat club. They enjoyed boating the Ohio River and the many lakes in the area. He moved his family in 1967 to Toronto, OH, where they raised their three daughters, Beth, Kim and Kelly.

He enjoyed gardening and playing golf. He was a long-standing member of the Dyer Country Club. He retired from Weirton Steel Corp. as a foreman in the Research and Development departments at Half Moon Industrial Park, Weirton, WV. He was an avid golfer who spent time golfing with his son-in-law, Abe Frost, all around the tri-state area. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Shannon Frost, Jarrod Frost, Mac Adams, James Adams and Ash Adams.

His family and friends will remember his kind and generous nature, always helping those in need. He enjoyed participating and giving back to the community, especially by donating his time for the local Toronto July 4th celebration.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Thomas and Catherine; and his sisters, Kathleen, Helen, Mary Alice and Margaret.

His beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children, Beth Frost (Abe Frost), Kim Adams (Morgan Adams), Kelly McElwain; and his niece, Julia Steinmetz, who was like his fourth daughter; his wife, Adrienne; and his sisters, Theresa Tombow (Alex), Suzanne Mason and Judy Andrews Pinyot (Ernie); and his many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his friends and family for his generosity, kindness and compassion for others.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service/committal will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021, at 1 p.m., at St. Paul Cemetery Mausoleum chapel with Reverend Tony Thurston as celebrant. Inurnment will be at St. Paul Cemetery, Weirton, WV.
