Curtis Doan

Curtis Clyde “Sonny” Doan of Wintersville, Ohio went to be with his Lord, Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at the age of 83. After several months of declining health, Curtis passed peacefully at his home with his beloved wife, Joan and several loved ones by his side.

Curtis was born August 25, 1937 in Wells Brilliant, Ohio, to William E. Doan and Frances Burgess Doan Dillon. He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country, proudly from 1955 to 1959 at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He worked for Advanced Metal Lithographing and Titanium Metal Corp. before going to work for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel where he retired in January, 2000, with 28 years of service. He was a dedicated member of Union Local 1190 United Steel Workers of America.

Beloved Husband, Dad (Pap) and Pop-Pop, Curtis lived his life to the fullest with the love of his life, Joan. Curtis and Joan met in 1960 and were married June 22, 1963. They spent 57 wonderful years raising a family and building a remarkable life together. They enjoyed traveling extensively after his retirement. They had four children that he was so proud of and nothing made his eyes sparkle more than his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He adored them more than anything.

Curtis was a member of the Wintersville United Methodist Church for six years. Prior to that, he served as a Church Elder, Sunday School Superintendent and various committee chairs at Richmond United Presbyterian Church where he was a member for 46 years. When his sons were in Scouts, he was a very active participant, serving on the Scout Boards. He was an avid bowler in two different leagues and loved reading and watching Westerns, particularly Louis L’Amour and Gunsmoke. His biggest hobby was feeding the birds and keeping track of all the different ones he saw.

Curtis is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Hazel Doan and Lucille Medich (Paul), stepmother Mary Doan, stepfather, Clifford O. Dillon, brother-in-law, Duane Swickard (Judy). He leaves behind his loving wife, Joan; four children, Retired Master Sergeant Kurtis E. Doan (Pamela) of Palmer, Alaska, Darla S. Doan of Wintersville, Kevin T. Doan (Cassie Paulman) of Steubenville, and Amiee R. Byers (Frank) of Canal Winchester, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Joshua Doan (Skyler Cochran), Jessica Doan (Lorne Rouse, Jr.), Zachariah Doan, Hailey Doan, Wyatt Doan, Dalenee Byers and Avariee Byers; a precious great granddaughter Ashton Doan and step great grandson Odin Dowling; his brother Bill E. Doan (Carol), brothers and sisters-in-law Donald (Rebecca) Swickard, Gail (Cathy) Swickard, Ken (Donna) Swickard, Faye (Gary) King and Glenna (William) Hemshrodt and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Friends will be received on Friday, October 16, 2020 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Everhart-Bove Funeral Home, 685 Canton Rd., Wintersville where funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Clint Quillen officiating.

Burial will follow at Richmond Presbyterian Cemetery with full Military Honors.
