Mary Durham

Mary H. Durham, 94, of Weirton, WV passed away Wednesday July 17, 2019 at the Weirton Geriatric Center.

She was born October 17, 1924 in Weirton, WV, the daughter of the late John and Terezia (Olenick) Yacos, Sr. She was raised in Weirton and graduated from Weir High School in 1940.

Surviving are three sons, James (Charlene P.) Helba, Jr. of McMurray, PA, their son, Brian Helba of Schenectady, NY and daughter Julianne Helba also of McMurray, PA, David W. Helba (Lisa) of Steubenville, OH and Stephen (Mary K.) Helba of Westerville, OH, their son Stephen (Sarah) Helba, Jr., and their daughter Tia M. of Cincinnati, OH, daughter Maura (Aaron) Urchek and their son Liam J. of Columbus, OH, and daughter Johanna Harting (Benjamin) and their daughter Mary C. of Westerville, OH, one brother, William (late Rose) Yacos of Weirton and many

Loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends scattered all over the world, but always in touch.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arnie R. Durham, an infant son, William Helba, three sisters, Yelena Yacos of Czechoslovakia in 1918, Irene (late John) Grossi, Helen “Tootsie” (late Walter “Buzzie”) Eckersberg, brother, Reverend John (late Matushka Helen Yacos Obuhanyk) Yacos, Jr. priest of the Holy Transfiguration Russian Orthodox Church of Steubenville, OH, and many Yacos and Olenick relatives both here in America and in Slovakia.

To all she was known variously as Mother, Mom, Baba, Merk, Aunt Merka, Aunt Mary, Cousin Mary and friend Mary. She was affiliated with God and had Russian Orthodox roots. She was a former member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Weirton. She was thankful and grateful throughout her life for the many hands of kinship and friendship extended toward her with their shared heartfelt sympathy, empathy, wisdom and generous contributions of all.

But she was especially humbly grateful for the Hand of God who touched her and said, “Fear not for I am with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and have courage.”

Visitation will be Saturday July 20, 2019, 10:30 a.m. until time of the funeral at noon at Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 380 Penco Road, Weirton, WV. Father Andrew P. Nelko will preside. Interment will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Weirton, WV. www.steelandwolfe.com
