John Romey Sr.

John J. “Hunk” Romey, Sr., 79, of Toronto, OH, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at his home.

John was born June 17, 1939 in Steubenville, OH, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Brem) Romey.

He was retired (43 years) from Timet-Titanium Mfg. in Toronto where he worked as a truck driver. Hunk was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Toronto and he was the Recreation Director for the City of Toronto, a position he has had for many years.

John, along with his best friend, Art Robertson (deceased), started the Toronto Titan youth football program. He was instrumental in building, improving and maintaining the Little League field, High School Baseball field, Girls’ Softball Field (Michael Simpson Park) and upgrading the Toronto War Memorial Pool.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Joann Jones and Claudette (Al) Jansson and an infant son John.

John leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Sarah Ann ‘Sally’ (Marshall) Romey; his two sons, John (Tammi) Romey of Toronto and Jeff (Andrea) Romey of Wintersville, OH; his grandson, John Mike Romey and his granddaughter, Nadia (Chris) Berardino; his three great-grandchildren, Avi, Gemma and Rocco Berardino and his brother-in-law, Bob Jones of Kansas City, MO.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto. His Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 11 am at St. Francis Church in Toronto. There will be additional viewing at the church on Friday from 10-11 a.m. Fr. Thomas Vennitti will officiate and his burial will be held at the convenience of his family.
