Joseph Vahalik

Joseph J. Vahalik, 92, of Amsterdam passed away Tuesday morning, December 4, 2018, at the Carroll Golden Age Retreat in Carrollton.

A son of the late Steve and Mary Gritser Vahalik, he was born November 11, 1926, in Amsterdam.

Joseph was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amsterdam and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine McLaughlin; three sons, Joe (Shelly) Vahalik of Kilgore, Dave (Marla) Vahalik of Amsterdam and Paul (Karen) Vahalik of Perrysburg, Ohio; a daughter, Tina Vahalik of Akron; five grandchildren, Jaime Pepperling, Greg Vahalik, Elizabeth Vahalik and Brad and Nicole Vahalik; eight great-grandchildren, Steve and Hailey Vahalik, Adelyn and Adam Pepperling, Kain Hutchison, Abby Niece and Leighton and Lillian Bausell.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen; four brothers, Johnny, George, Steve and Robert; and three sisters, Annie, Eleanor and Mary Louise.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church of Amsterdam with Fr. John McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in Bergholz Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-8 p.m. in Dodds Funeral Home of Amsterdam with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m.
