Ceremony to remember police officers who’ve died in the line of duty

STEUBENVILLE — Members of Fort Steuben Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 1 will pause Thursday to remember police officers who’ve died in the line of duty across the country, including 10 here in Jefferson County.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in Historic Fort Steuben Park.

“The tradition of National Police Week and Peace Officer Memorial Day dates back to 1961, when it was signed into law by JFK,” FOP Lodge 1 vice president, Detective Sgt. Ryan Lulla, said. “Different departments pay tribute to their fallen officers in different ways and I believe it’s important to recognize that there are people who devote themselves to the safety of others, regardless of the danger to themselves.”

The roster of fallen police officers from Jefferson County departments includes:

• Steubenville: Patrolman Leslie McDonald (1908), Patrolman Lafayette Mercer (1914), Patrolman Owen Burns, (1926), Lt. Scott Roe (1928), Patrolman Lenard Lamatrice (1972) and Patrolman Thomas McGough (1972)

• Jefferson County: Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Brandle (2015).

• Mingo Junction Patrolman William Snider (1923) and Lt. Michael J Maguschak Sr. (1970)

• Toronto Patrolman Ralph Benton Miller Sr., (1978).

“The Steubenville Police Department will be celebrating its 200 th anniversary next year and in those 200 years we’ve lost six officers in the line of duty,” Lulla said. “Those six officers are memorialized in our police station and it is one of the first things you see upon entering each day.”
