Access to Millsop Center pool to be limited as part of project

WEIRTON — Access to the indoor swimming area of the Millsop Community Center may be limited, or, in some cases, prohibited, beginning May 1.

The work is part of the ongoing south wall/footer stabilization and repair project at the community center, which will include the replacement of the ceiling in the swimming pool area.

The third phase of the project has a planned cost of $1.72 million.

In all, the Park Board and the city have invested more than $2 million in the project to preserve the more than 70-year-old, 86,000-square-foot facility, which has an estimated value in excess of $30 million.

Officials note there are no present threats to public safety as part of the project, and contractors will employ safety zones and barriers to ensure safe usage of the facility, as well as passage around and through the center.

Sarah’s Lane, located between the Millsop Community Center and the Mary H. Weir Public Library, also might periodically need to be closed to traffic.

Those who frequently use the swimming pool are encouraged to call ahead to verify its availability. Information can be found by calling (304) 797-8520.

In the event the closures impact center members whose only use is for the pool, memberships will be extended to match the amount of time of the pool closure.
