RAYLAND — A juvenile has been arrested in connection with shooting threats made on social media against Buckeye Local Junior and Senior High Schools late Sunday night.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla Jr. said Monday that a Buckeye Local School District student had been placed in custody early that morning. The juvenile has allegedly admitted to creating a Snapchat account and sending threats against the schools.

Abdalla said charges will be determined by the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Buckeye Local Superintendent Coy Sudvary said a parent notified him of the threats around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. He then contacted the sheriff’s department, which immediately launched an investigation and conducted interviews, leading to the student’s arrest around 3 a.m. Monday.

“The sheriff’s department did an excellent job. We’re very appreciative of their cooperation,” Sudvary said.

A meeting will be scheduled with the student and family members to determine discipline on the school’s part, Sudvary said.

Fortunately, the overnight arrest meant school could continue as normal Monday, Sudvary said. Attendance was down, due to some parents “being cautious with their kids.”

This incident marks the second social media shooting threat the junior and senior high schools have been subject to during the 2024-2025 academic year. Similar threats made on Snapchat in September resulted in one juvenile’s arrest and class cancellations.

Sudvary said the district is having open discussions about additional safety measures, potentially including metal detectors.

“We’re open to all considerations. We’ve been having ongoing conversations about what else we can do additionally. We do have monthly safety meetings through the district, so we’re constantly evaluating. … Certainly, we’re going to try to prevent as many problems (like this) as possible.”

Sudvary said all Buckeye Local schools are fortunate this year to have a school resource officer in every building — a first for the district.
