Conservation order remains in place in Weirton

WEIRTON — Officials anticipate the water conservation order in Weirton to remain in place for at least another week as crews continue to locate and find leaks in the distribution system.

The boil order for all of Weirton Heights — the last of the major orders issued as part of Weirton’s water crisis — was lifted Thursday morning, with officials also discontinuing the distribution of bottled water and non-potable water to affected residents.

“Within the past few days, the water department has notified the public that the city-wide boil order and distribution of free bottled water and non-potable water for flushing toilets, laundry, etc. have been discontinued,” notes an update issued Friday. “Unfortunately, the city-wide mandatory conservation order will continue for another ten days or so.”

The conservation order was issued Dec. 18 following a series of water line breaks throughout Weirton, with a city-wide boil order issued Dec. 27.

With the lifting of the last large-scale boil order, officials with the Weirton Area Water Board say much of the distribution of water through its system has returned to close-to-normal levels.

“We are pleased to report that water supplies, pressure, and flow volumes have generally normalized across the city, including at local schools,” the notice states. “Our dedicated employees continue to locate and repair water line breaks as they are found or arise. As a result, residents and businesses may still experience intermittent fluctuations in water pressure as repairs continue, and boil orders may be necessary for streets directly affected by water line breaks.”

As of Sunday afternoon, there were no boil orders issued in Weirton.
