Juvenile arrested for car thefts in Toronto
TORONTO — City Police have reported one juvenile has been arrested, and arrests are pending for two others, in connection with a series of recent vehicle thefts in which two firearms, cash and other items were stolen.
City Police Chief Charley Daniels said it’s believed the three also stole money from a cab driver who had transported them from Steubenville to Toronto.
Daniels said video cameras in the cab and near city streets where the vehicles were parked have helped his department to identify the three, and arrests of the other two are expected in the near future.
He said it’s against state policy to release the names of juvenile offenders.
The police chief said property stolen from unlocked vehicles on various city streets included two 9mm handguns and up to $32,000 in cash.
Daniels said the investigation led city officers on Monday to a residence where one of the handguns and other evidence were discovered.
He said the other handgun was recovered earlier.
He said the juvenile in custody was arrested at the scene, while a second fled on foot.
Daniels said, “We want to thank members of the public who reported the incidents and assisted throughout the investigation. We want to emphasize the importance of reporting all criminal activity as well as locking unattended vehicles.”
He said while some citizens reported through social media that homes also had been illegally entered, his department received no such reports.
He said residents should report such crimes immediately to the police department at (740) 537-1591.
