WEIRTON — Despite temperatures measuring in the low 20s, the community turned out for the festivities of the Weirton Christmas Parade Saturday.

Organized by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, this year’s parade featured a theme of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and included traditional Christmas tunes, a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for Jesus and even an appearance by Elvis.

“It was cold, but it was a good parade,” noted Weirton Chamber President Brenda Mull.

With a variety of decorated and lit floats, performances by the marching bands from Weir, Oak Glen and Brooke high schools, as well as several local dance schools, appearances from area first responder agencies and much more, the parade was sponsored by West Virginia Northern Community College and Nick’s Auto.

“We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors,” Mull said.

Nick’s Auto has been a supporter of the parade for many years, also providing logistical support over the years with vehicles to pull various floats. According to Jodie Snodgrass, the parade has been a big part of the community for many years, with families coming together for decades to watch the festivities. Those familial connections also are reflected in the business’ involvement.

“It’s generational,” she said. “My dad did it. I’m now doing it, and my son is doing it.”

Lisa Soly, representing WVNCC, recognized the sense of togetherness surrounding the parade and the holidays as people lined the streets Saturday night.

“The parade is such a long-standing tradition,” Soly said. “It’s heartwarming to see people come out each year.”

The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley was recognized as this year’s honorary grand marshal, with representatives of the charitable organization and some of its member agencies riding on a float, many dressed as popular holiday characters.

Pizza; Domino’s; Goodwill, and McDonald’s/Tomtreyco.

Mull offered her appreciation to the members of the chamber’s Special Projects Committee for their work on planning the parade.
