Christmas event coming to Brooke Hills Park Saturday
WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Fair Board and Brooke Hills Park have teamed up to hold a holiday event with assorted vendors, contests and activities for children from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the park.
Dubbed “Simply Christmas,” the event will be held in the area of the Cardinal Shelter at the park, which is on state Route 27, about five miles from state Route 2 in Wellsburg.
Patty Lish — who has worked with her sister, Darla Burns, and others to organize it — said it’s both an opportunity to raise some funds for the county fair and to offer free activities for children.
She said the shelter will be divided into four areas with things for children to do, such as crafts and cookie decorating; and a dime toss in which participants will have an opportunity to win stuffed animals dressed in holiday costumes.
Lish added there also will be about 20 vendors selling assorted items and a cocoa bar, soup and sandwiches for sale.
“We’ll also have fire pits to help people stay warm,” she added.
For $2 each, everyone may purchase a memory ornament, in memory of a loved one, or ornament bearing a photo of their pet, for display on separate trees at the event.
They may be purchased at the event or in advance through the Brooke County Fair’s Facebook page and picked up after the event at the park’s clubhouse.
There also will be drawings for 10 assorted prizes at 3 p.m. Tickets also may be purchased through the Facebook page or on that day and are $1 each, six for $5 and 25 for $20.
Starting at 2 p.m. there will be a scavenger hunt in which teams of two or four adults will be challenged to find and photograph certain items found at the event. The one who finds the most things will win a cash prize.
Lish said visitors seeking a unique photo for their Christmas cards may pose for one with an old red truck or take one of their child in a toy car.
She said Henthorn Farms also will have their alpacas on hand while all visitors are invited to bring a donation of a non-perishable food, toy, pet supply or outdoor winter wear to the Be a Blessing area.
Lish said the items will be donated to local charities.
Janice McFadden, the park’s manager, said there are still some seats available for the 1:30 p.m. Brunch with Santa at the Bald Eagle Shelter.
The event is open to children in fourth grade and under. The cost is $6 per person and reservations can be made by calling (304) 737-1236 or visiting https://brooke-hills-park-square.site.
The website offers visitors an opportunity to purchase golf passes to the park for those seeking a Christmas present for the golfer in their family.
