Hancock Commission fills office positions
NEW CUMBERLAND — There will be a few changes in the offices of the Hancock County Commission.
As part of their meeting Thursday, commissioners approved hirings to fill two administrative posts in the commission office – with John Klee set to fill the vacant post of county administrator, and Theresa Cain being brought in as the new office administrator.
Klee is stepping into a post vacated in July with the resignation of former county administrator Paul Zuros. Zuros had held the position since October 2022.
The advertisement described the job as serving as a combination of county manager, information technology manager and operations manager, with an annual salary range of between $35,000 and $80,000.
Following the meeting, Commissioner Eron Chek said Klee had scored high with everyone involved in reviewing applications.
Cain, meanwhile, will transfer from the County Clerk’s Office to fill the office administrator post, which became vacant earlier this month with the resignation of Ontasia Petteway.
Petteway’s resignation, which is effective Oct. 18, also was approved by the commission Thursday, although commissioners tabled consideration to pay her accrued vacation time.
“She was with the commission for about a year,” noted Commission President Jeff Davis. “Prior to that, she was with the Clerk’s Office.”
Davis, Chek and Commissioner Paul Cowey all offered their thanks to Petteway for her work in the Commission Office, as did Mike Lucas, legal counsel for the commission.
“I wish her all the best in her future,” Lucas said.
In other business, Thursday, commissioners:
Tabled the appointment of an individual to the Oakland Public Service District Board
Approved a memorandum to release the Deed of Trust for Stephanie M. Barchiesi of 176 Hillcrest Road, Weirton, with Lucas explaining it was a formality as part of a program through CHANGE Inc.;
Accepted a bid by David Howell, at $71,335, for the auditing of fiscal years 2023 and 2024, with Chek noting it was the lowest of two bids and recommended by the State Auditor’s Office;
Approved the application and resolution for a 2025-26 Records Management and Preservation Board Grant;
Accepted an order denying the claim in the Estate of Michael Dean Woolley Jr.;
Approved the Report of Delinquent Estate pertaining to the Estate of Scott E. Parr Sr.;

The commission will next meet at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 14.
