Woman arrested after fleeing police
STEUBENVILLE — A 40-year-old Steubenville woman was taken into custody Saturday after allegedly trying to evade police officers following a traffic violation.
Charmaine Lester, 451 Railroad Ave., Steubenville, was charged with obstruction and an outstanding bench warrant for a probation violation, police said. She also was cited for driving under suspension, stop sign violation and improper display of plates.
Police allege Lester Avenue ran a stop sign at Railroad and Slack streets, then took off on Linden Avenue “at a high rate of speed” before running another stop sign at Garret and Railroad avenues, eventually rounding a sharp bend in the 600 block of Hermenia Avenue. They said the driver parked the vehicle and fled on foot.
An individual matching the driver’s description was spotted on a porch in the 600 block of Lincoln Avenue rear, police said. A bystander told them the woman had entered the residence unannounced and was made to leave.
The homeowner declined to pursue charges, as did the owner of a home on Hermenia Avenue that Lester allegedly hit with her car.
