Locals fired up by Trump Jr.’s visit
STEUBENVILLE — For local supporters of President Donald Trump, Thursday night was something special.
Donald Trump Jr., the president’s oldest son, delivered remarks to a crowd of around 500 people at a campaign rally outside of Bully Tools in the Jefferson County Industrial Park.
Local supporters of the president were left fired up by his speech, which covered a lot of his father’s campaign’s key talking points.
Jill Shoemaker, a resident of Steubenville, shared the experience with her daughters.
“It was really awesome to see him in person, this was my first time being at a rally,” she said. “It almost takes your breath away. My heart is pounding with excitement. It gets you all fired up to have everyone around you cheering and chanting ‘four more years’ and ‘U.S.A.’
“His speech was very inspiring, it just gets me even more excited about the election and more excited for Donald Trump to become president again. I love how honest and up front they are, how bold they are and how they are fighting for us and for America.
“It was a great experience to share with my daughters. They just loved it. I want them to love their country and have as much passion for it as the Trump administration does, and as I do.”
Luke Terry, a Steubenville resident, said it was special to have such a big event in his hometown.
“It was very good,” he said. “I’ve watched many Trump Jr. speeches and he’s a very powerful speaker. This is one in particular, seeing it in person was fantastic. He actually interacted with people around me numerous times. He’s very charismatic and direct, he targets younger audiences. It was a fantastic speech really targeted towards our area.
“It’s extremely empowering being a younger person attending one of these events. It was pretty exciting to have this in Steubenville. I was kind of in doubt when I first heard it. It shouldn’t be too surprising, though, especially because of all the parades. It was fantastic.”
For Carly Newman, who is originally from Cincinnati but is attending the Franciscan University of Steubenville, being a part of it was something she really to do. She said she originally intended to volunteer, but a surplus of volunteers made it possible for her to be a spectator.
“I love Donald Trump, and Don Jr. is second best so I came here to see him,” she said. “Right here in Steubenville, you wouldn’t expect this.”
The event happened around 48 hours after it was announced, but locals showed up in droves on short notice.
Supporters gathered outside the venue several hours prior to the event, Technology Way was lined with vehicles recognizable from the local “Trump Train” parades, and the standing-room only crowd continued to file in up until the moment Trump Jr. took the stage.
Jefferson County Republican Party Chairman Matt Parise was thrilled with the turnout.
“We literally had three days to get everyone here,” Parise said. “We put the word out the best we could. We’re thrilled. I think this just shows the excitement level in the Ohio Valley for Donald Trump. I’ve said it all along and I’ll continue to say it — this is Trump territory. The crowd (Thursday) shows that. Republicans, Democrats, independents — are all here to listen to Donald Trump Jr.
“This is great. Everyone is excited. They are all friendly with each other, all talking to each other. Everyone is excited about the election, excited about Donald Trump and what he’s done for this area.
“This area couldn’t ask for a better president, and that’s indicative of the amount of people that showed up.”
