Weirton zoning board approves sign variances
WEIRTON — The city’s Zoning Board of Appeals approved two sign variances for local businesses during its meeting last week.
Weirton Fitness Complex, at 243 Three Springs Drive, requested its variance to allow a 158-square-foot wall sign. Under the Unified Development Ordinance, that location would normally be allowed a maximum of 67 square feet.
No representatives for the business were present, Tuesday, but Zoning Board Chair Amanda Alexander said she had no objections.
“Looking at the pictures, I don’t see any problems,” Alexander said.
Planning and Development Director Jessica Gumm said the city administration also had no problem with the request.
“It’s just a logo that’s adding the extra signage,” Gumm said.
The board also approved a variance request for Steel Town Auto Sale, 3135 Main St., for a monument sign to be placed 3 feet from the sidewalk. The UDO requires a 5-foot setback.
It was noted neighboring buildings sit closer to the street, with signs hanging over the sidewalk, limiting the visibility of the business.
