WEIRTON — It may still be July, and the forecast called for rain instead of snow, but the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce worked to bring the spirit of Christmas to the area Thursday.

Twenty-four teams of golfers hit the fairways at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course for the chamber’s annual Christmas in July golf tournament.

“It was a good day for a golf tournament,” chamber President Brenda Mull said. “I think people are excited to get outside and do something.”

Mull offered thanks to the tournament’s major sponsors, Crow Dental Associates, Encompass Health, Trinity Health System, Bread Basket Bakery and PeppeBroni’s. PeppeBroni’s also provided pizza for the golfers while out on the course, as well as dinner at the conclusion of the tournement.

“We appreciate everyone coming out year after year to support us,” Mull said.

Proceeds from the tournament help to support the chamber’s programs and services.

As part of organizing the tournament, chamber officials worked with Woodview Golf Course to ensure precautions were taken against the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus and to follow state health guidelines.

“It had to be a little different this year,” Mull noted, explaining all of the activities were held outside, and social distancing measures were observed.

Items for the prize drawing and the dinner were held under one of the course’s shelters, with limitations on the number of people inside the club house.

Another change, for the tournament itself, was the use of a pod system for the teams, with monetary prizes awarded to the top finishers in each pod, as well as a bonus prize for the overall finisher.
