Wednesday fire leaves man dead

WINTERSVILLE — A house fire at 1 p.m. Wednesday claimed the life of a 65-year-old village resident.

Wintersville Fire and Rescue Chief and 911 Director Rob Herrington said the victim, William Garrison of 401 Ward Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene. He said Garrison’s manufactured home was “heavily involved” when firefighters arrived on scene.

“They made entry right away, they found (him) right inside the door,” Herrington said, adding the fire marshal had been on scene.

“We couldn’t find anything other than that it started around the couch in the living room, which is where he was known to stay,” Herrington said. “We didn’t really find any electrical issues, there was no sign of foul play or forced entry, nothing like that.”

He did say Garrison was on oxygen around the clock.

“That was a major contributing factor, there were a number of oxygen cylinders and equipment in the room,” he said. “Some of them ruptured and caused the fire to spread.”

Departments from Wintersville, Richmond, and Belvedere responded.
