Hancock County BOE purchasing 3,000 iPads for new school year
NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Board of Education is purchasing 3,000 iPads as part of its plans for the upcoming school year.
School board members held a special meeting via teleconference Tuesday morning, agreeing to the purchase as part of its “1:1 Technology Initiative.”
“We currently have 1,000 iPads in place,” Finance Director Joe Campinelli said.
The 3,000 new iPads, to be purchased through a state contract, will enable each student enrolled in Hancock County Schools to have an iPad in order to download their school work in the event of remote learning situations.
During Monday’s regular board meeting, Superintendent Dawn Petrovich explained the options being discussed for the 2020-21 school year, including five-day, in-person instruction; blended scheduling incorporating both in-person and remote learning; and all-remote schedules. There also is the possibility of students enrolling into a virtual school program.
The cost of the purchase is set at $1,073,850, which officials noted will be provided through the county’s Step 7 allocation from the state as well as C.A.R.E.S. Act funding.
According to Steve McKinney, the school district’s technology director, each school building has been outfitted with WiFi hotspots, which will allow students to download classwork in the event they don’t have internet access at home.
