Two arrested on drug charges

STEUBENVILLE — Information that a Cleveland man under indictment in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio was living in Steubenville led to his arrest Friday.

The Jefferson County Drug Task Force said the tip led to a narcotics investigation that culminated in the arrest of Calvin Winbush, 32, and Jermaine Readus, 30, also of Cleveland.

About 80 grams of cocaine and roughly $13,000 in cash was seized during the arrests.

The task force worked with the FBI in Cleveland to apprehend Winbush, who is awaiting federal extradition. Readus will be arraigned in Wintersville County Court sometime next week, authorities said.

Mingo Community Days canceled

MINGO JUNCTION — Officials in the village have decided to cancel this year’s Mingo Community Days celebration.

“The Mingo Business Association and Mayor Ed Fithen have decided the with all the health concerns right now, it would not be in the village’s best interest to have community days,” Jim Freiling, association vice president, wrote in a statement.

“It’s a really hard decision, but it’s better to be safe than sorry,” he continued. “We would like to thank all of the sponsors, musicians, vendors, citizens and volunteers who have supported the event.”

Portion of County Road 1 to close

RAYLAND — A portion of Jefferson County Road 1 (Glen Robbins-Mount Pleasant-Rayland Road) will be closed to all traffic for approximately five weeks beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, the county engineer’s department has announced.

The closure for a bridge replacement will be 3.2 miles west of the intersection with state Route 150.

Council to meet in person Monday

TORONTO –Toronto Council will meet in person at 7 p.m. Monday at the Toronto Municipal Building, with all attendees asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Council had been meeting through videoconference, with some city officials participating from the Municipal Building.

Public hearing on airport zoning set

WINTERSVILLE — The Jefferson County Airport Zoning Commission has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed airport zoning regulations at 6 p.m. Aug. 12.

Interested parties are invited to attend the meeting to voice their opinion on the zoning proposal.

Mingo Junction pool will not open

MINGO JUNCTION — Members of Village Council have decided the swimming pool at Aracoma Park will remain closed for the remainder of the summer.

Council members made the decision during their June 21 meeting, council President Mike Herrick explained.

Road improvement projects planned

NEW PHILADELPHIA — The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced the following construction projects, weather permitting:

¯ State Route 43 resurfacing project: Work started to resurface state Route 43 in Wintersville from Lovers Lane to Powells Lane. Traffic will be maintained via flaggers. Completion date: Sept. 30.

¯ State Route 7 resurfacing project: State Route 7 to be resurfaced from Stratton to Wellsville. During this work, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction with a 15-foot width restriction. Completion: Oct. 31.

¯ State Route 7 restricted near Mingo Junction: State Route 7 is restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction due to a recent landslide. The completion date is unknown.

¯ State Route 646 resurfacing project: This project includes the resurfacing of state Route 646 from state Route 152 to state Route 43. Traffic will be maintained via flaggers. Completion date: Oct. 15.

¯ State Route 151 resurfacing project: Project includes the resurfacing of state Route 151 from Hopedale to New Alexandria. Traffic will be maintained via flaggers. Completion date: Sept. 30.

¯ State Route 151 culvert replacement project: State Route 151 restricted to one lane of traffic just west of state Route 7 for a culvert replacement project. Traffic will be maintained via temporary traffic signals. Completion date: Aug. 31.

¯ State Route 519 resurfacing project: Work is set to begin Monday on the resurfacing of state Route 519 from New Athens to U.S. Route 250. Traffic will be maintained via flaggers. Completion date: Sept. 30.

¯ U.S. Route 22 resurfacing project: Project includes the resurfacing of U.S. Route 22 through Hopedale from Donley Road to County Line Road. Traffic will be maintained via alternating lane closures. Completion date: Oct. 31.

Village council, committee to meet

WINTERSVILLE –The village’s street and sanitation committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Village Complex.

The meeting will be followed at 7 p.m. by the next regular Wintersville Council meeting.

After meeting by teleconference in recent months, council has resumed meeting in person while encouraging attendees to wear masks and practice social distancing.
