Wellsburg woman sentenced in DUI death case

WELLSBURG — A Wellsburg woman has been sentenced to up to 25 years in home confinement and prison for causing an auto collision that led to the death of a Weirton man.

On Monday Kristy Jones, 42, of Wellsburg, was sentenced to two to 10 years in home confinement for driving while impaired resulting in bodily injury and to three to 15 years in prison for driving while impaired resulting in death.

The sentences came through a plea agreement reached by Jones’ attorneys, Michael Simon and Kevin Pearl; and Brooke County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney David F. Cross and accepted by 1st Judicial Circuit Court Judge Ronald Wilson.

Through it, a charge of negligent homicide filed against Jones was dropped.

Cross said the period of home confinement was agreed upon because Jones has been diagnosed with cancer and it will allow her to undergo treatment while still under electronic surveillance at home.

He said after one year of home confinement, she will appear before the court to determine if she can safely serve the prison sentence.

Jones’ charges stem from a Jan. 15, 2019 incident that resulted in the death of 20-year-old Hubert “Jamie” Logue of Weirton and injuries to his passenger.

According to police reports, Jones was northbound on state Route 2 between Beech Bottom and Wellsburg when she veered into the southbound lane, colliding with the front end of Logue’s vehicle, which then veered into an adjacent guardrail.

Logue was transported by ambulance to Weirton Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead; while his passenger and Jones were transported to area hospitals for treatment of their own injuries.

Brooke County sheriff’s deputies conducting the investigation said she was under the influence of prescription medication found in her blood.

Jones told court officials she suffers from low potassium, for which she receives weekly treatments; and believes an incidence of low potassium caused her to lose consciousness.

She told the court she is remorseful over Logue’s death and has had nightmares about it.
