Toronto students receive many honors

SPECIAL RECOGNITION — A.J. Clegg, a member of the Toronto High School Class of 2020, has been named the recipient of the Larry Herdman Award, which is presented to the school’s top athlete. The award is named for a Toronto High School graduate who went on to play football and baseball at West Point and was killed in the line of duty while serving as an Air Force pilot in 1958. TORONTO — Members of the Toronto High School Class of 2020 were rewarded for their hard work with scholarships and other honors thanks to the generosity of many local businesses, community organizations and citizens, said Maureen Taggart, superintendent of Toronto City Schools.

Taggart announced the class’ top students: Valedictorian Kaycen Burchfield, salutatorian Hailey Connor, William Lewis, Aaron Kuchan, Anthony Porreca, A.J. Clegg, Sarah Pinkerton, Brendan Matyas, Caleb Roberts and Audrey Wagstaff.

Also graduating with honors were Isabelle Leasure and Caleb Roberts.

The class honor students included Caitlynn Aracich, Christopher Aubrey-Biggie, Justin Clark, Jasmine Crisco, Sarah Crouch, James Dunlope, Lucas Gulczynski, Sania Habib, Drew Humpe, Coulter Kelly, Isabelle Leasure, Jocelyn Merideth, Brooklyn Price, Ryan Reidy, Madison Sapp, Bailey Shreves, Chloe Swickard, Tristan Thomas, Maegyn Trudics, Shane VanSteenberg and Madison Zdinak.

Receiving the President’s Award for Educational Excellence were Aaron Kuchan, William Lewis, Anthony Porreca and Shane VanSteenberg.

Toronto High School Alumni Scholarships were awarded to Maegyn Trudics, Lucas Gulczynski and Madison Zdinak, while the THS Alumni Association Foundation Scholarship went to A.J. Clegg.

Other honors presented included the Robert T. Hughes Memorial Grant to Kaycen Burchfield, the valedictorian; the Dr. Verne McConnell Memorial Scholarship to Brooklyn Price; the Jason Motto Memorial Award to Chloe Swickard; the Cliff and Hazel Walker Award to Jocelyn Merideth; and the Bill and Betty Davis Award to Tristan Thomas.

The Titan Cheerleader Award was presented to Audrey Wagstaff, while the Titan Football Player Award recipient was Brendan Matyas.

The Dr. Jane Shaffer Award went to Sarah Pinkerton, the Richard and Betty Hughes Award to Sarah Crouch and the Kris Kelly Award to Zach Stackhouse and Bailey Shreves.

The Janet Kruise Scholarship went to Isabella Irwin, the Ed and Marilyn Gray Award to Jamie Anderson and the Carolyn Argentine Byers Scholarship to Jordyn Risler.

A scholarship to Eastern Gateway Community College Scholarship was awarded to James Dunlope, the Toronto Education Association Scholarship went to Kaycen Burchfield and two Rod Henry Kiwanis Club Scholarships were awarded to Shane VanSteenberg and Brooklyn Price.

The Gino Biasi Memorial Scholarship was presented to Drew Humpe, the Mike Shuma Scholarship to Jamie Anderson and Jocelyn Merideth and the American Legion Scholarship to A.J. Clegg.

The Blaner Gift Scholarship was awarded to Jamie Anderson, the Noah Long Memorial Scholarship to Zac Berger and the Student Senate Scholarship to Jocelyn Merideth.

The Activity Account Scholarship was awarded to Audrey Wagstaff, the Toronto Masonic Lodge 583 Award to Tristan Thomas and Pay It Forward Scholarships to James Dunlope, Kyre Smith and Bailey Shreves.

The Kathryn Hammond Award was presented to Jocelyn Merideth and the Larry Herdman Award went to A.J. Clegg. Two scholarships awarded in honor of Todd Kalivoda were awarded to Brendan Matyas and Lucas Gulczynski.

The Frank “Windy” Kestner Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Tristan Thomas and the Archie Griffin Awards went to A.J. Clegg and Jocelyn Merideth.

James Dunlope received the National Federation of High Schools’ National Award for Excellence.

Receiving Athletic Boosters Awards were Madison Zdinak, Isaac Miller, Isabella Irwin and Lucas Gulczynski.

Jamie Anderson and Brendan Matyas received the Larry “Pappy” Coil Award, the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Courageous Student Award was presented to Madison Sapp and the OHSSA State Award for Sportsmanship went to Jennifer Matyas and Korey Clegg.

The Nancy Beswick Memorial Scholarship went to Jocelyn Merideth, the 26.2 Award to Matthew Firm and two scholarships in memory of Chuck “Flap” Walker were given to Lucas Gulczynski and Jamie Anderson.

The D.W. Hoover Award was presented to Caleb Roberts, the Barry Stewart Memorial Scholarship to Jocelyn Merideth and the James D. Crawford Award to Caleb Roberts.

The Barbara Craven Award was presented to Aaron Kuchan, the John Phillips Sousa Award to Caleb Roberts and the Kirk W. and Sally George Music Award to Sarah Crouch.

The Arion Award was presented to Hailey Connor, the class’ salutatorian; the Don Chichilo Music Scholarship to Drew Humpe and the Reanne K. Phillips Scholarship to Brendan Matyas.

Jordyn Risler was presented the Lucille Campbell Award, and Sarah Crouch received the Three Arts Award.

Receiving Charles M. Pugliese and Thelma M. Pugliese Foundation Scholarships were Hailey Connor, Will Lewis, Aaron Kuchan and Kaycen Burchfield.

Anthony Porreca received a Red Cross Scholarship, while the Focus In Toronto Community Service Award presented in memory of Glenn Blanton was presented to Audrey Wagstaff.

The James and Betty Coffey Scholarship was awarded to D’Andre Thompson, and Toronto Youth Basketball Scholarships went to Isabelle Leasure, A.J. Clegg, Brendan Matyas and Lucas Gulczynski.

Two scholarships in memory of Kenneth Young went to Shane VanSteenberg and Brendan Matyas.

Senior academic letters were presented to Kaycen Burchfield, A.J. Clegg, Hailey Connor, James Dunlope, Lucas Gulczynski, Jocelyn Merideth Anthony Porreca and Audrey Wagstaff.

Members of the Class of 2020 joining the military were recognized. They are Sania Habib and Jacob Clark, who both are entering the Army; Coulter Kelly and Jenna Reed, Air Force; and Shane VanSteenberg, who will be entering the Army or Air Force.

Members going on to participate in college athletics include Jamie Anderson, at Wheeling University; Zac Berger, Fairmont State University; A. J. Clegg and Lucas Gluczynski, both at Northern Kentucky University; Isabella Irwin, California University of Pennsylvania; and Madison Zdinak, Kent State University.
