Arrest made in Steubenville shooting death
STEUBENVILLE — A person of interest in the Monday night shooting death of 32-year-old Ja’ron Williams is in custody, but police are not releasing any further details.
Williams, a Steubenville resident, was shot to death shortly before midnight in the 600 block of Franklin Avenue, police said.
A second man, Craig Blackwell, 37, also of Steubenville, is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Information on his condition was not available Tuesday.
Police received reports shots had been fired in the vicinity of North Seventh Street and Franklin and a man was down around 11:30 p.m. Monday. They located Williams body in the alley behind American Legion Post 274 with several spent shell casings nearby.
City Manager Jim Mavromatis and Police Chief Bill McCafferty declined to identify the person of interest, saying detectives have not completed their investigation.
Mavromatis, however, did say a third person had left the scene before police arrived, crediting “excellent cooperation by citizens and excellent work by our detectives, tracing all leads and getting information from all sources.”
“In less than 24 hours this case was solved,” he said. “A lot of the credit goes to our citizens, a lot to our police department.”
No motive has been released.
