Brooke County commissioners concerned about road slip

WELLSBURG — Though state highway officials have indicated they can’t give a date for repairs to a slip along Valley View Drive, the Brooke County Commissioners said they will continue to push for a speedy solution.

On Tuesday the commission received a letter from Byrd E. White III, state secretary of transportation, who said, “I am pleased to inform you that the slip on Valley View Drive in Brooke County has been programmed and scheduled for repair; however, our crews are currently working on higher priority slips throughout the district. Repairs to this slip are projected to be finished sometime in 2020.”

White added, “Please be assured that we will continue to monitor this slip.”

Tim Ennis, the commission’s president, expressed frustration that a more definite date wasn’t given.

“2020 could be a whole year, he said. “That (road) is those people’s in and out. They have no other access to their homes. That road just inches its way back a little more each day.”

Ennis said 75 to 100 homes are located on streets accessed from Valley View Drive, which has been reduced to one lane.

Concerns also have been voiced about the slip damaging drainage structures diverting runoff from the hillside, which has resulted in flooding in other areas above the city.
