Wintersville Christmas parade set

WINTERSVILLE — Village officials invite area residents to join them in celebrating the Christmas season at the Wintersville Christmas Parade at 3 p.m. Dec. 1.

A long-time tradition, the procession will begin from the former Riesbeck’s store, where participants will line up at 1 p.m., to the Kroger store.

Village Administrative Assistant Tammy Straka, who coordinates the event with Council President Bob Merriman, noted this year it falls close to Thanksgiving so parade-goers may include visiting former residents.

She said about 25 units have signed up so far but many more are expected, adding groups have until Nov. 27 to do so.

Those interested in participating should call Straka at (740) 266-3175.

Straka said the parade has included local school marching bands, cheering and dance groups, police, firefighters and other first responders; 4-H clubs, equestrian units and special guest Santa Claus.

She said a highlight of the parade for her is the young children who turn out to see Santa and the various emergency vehicles.

“That’s what makes it fun — the children,” she said.

Straka noted the city’s streetlights will be decorated with Christmas lights for the occasion and the overall Christmas season.
