Suspect in bank heists identified

STEUBENVILLE — City Police detectives on Wednesday met with the FBI to discuss the involvement of a Houston, Pa., man in a series of bank robberies, two of which were in the city.

Police Chief William McCafferty said Daryl Waychoff, 55, was arrested in Pennsylvania earlier this month following a bank robbery in Bruceton Mills, W.Va. McCafferty said Waychoff fled that bank robbery on a motorcycle and made it into Pennsylvania where he crashed.

McCafferty said Waychoff is facing charges in seven bank robberies dating back to October 2017 in West Virginia and Ohio.

The First National Bank branch was robbed on June 12, 2018, and the Huntington Bank branch was robbed on Dec. 19, 2017.

Both branches are located in the Hollywood City Center.

McCafferty said the robber of the First National Bank fled on a motorcycle. He said when he saw Waychoff was caught in Pennsylvania on a motorcycle, he thought that maybe Waychoff was involved in the bank robberies here.

The chief said police here are working with other departments to determine how the cases will proceed.
