Details released on fatal fall

ADENA — The family of a Short Creek Joint Fire District assistant chief who died Sept. 4 was taking an honor ride in a fire truck following the funeral when a family member fell out of the truck.

Marguerite E. Appel, 64, of Edgerton, the sister of Jim Horton Jr., the deceased assistant fire chief, fell from the truck around 12:20 p.m. on Monday on county Road 6 in Smithfield Township.

According to a release from the fire district, the door to the truck opened during the ride. Appel was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital, where she later was pronounced dead.

Horton was a paramedic and firefighter for 42 years, being a member of the Adena Volunteer Fire Department for 29 years. He was chief and assistant chief for the Short Creek Joint Fire District.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the death.

“Our prayers and condolences go out to the family of the late assistant fire chief Horton,” noted a release signed by Short Creek Joint Fire District Chief Joseph Manbeck and district Chairman Dan Cermak.
