WELLSBURG — Residents of Wellsburg have a new place to find a bargain, thanks to the opening of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop.

The store, which has been open for the past three weeks at 98 7th St., will hold its official grand opening Saturday.

Manager Teresa Berry said the store is stocked with the overflow of items from the Wheeling thrift shop.

She said the officials at the store decided that instead of renting additional storage space for the excess of items being given to the Wheeling store, they would open a new location in one of the surrounding communities.

“Up here they needed (a store),” Berry said. “Everyone has said that when they come in.”

Berry said right now the thrift store is simply working as a store front, but before long, they will turn into a regular part of the charity and offer other services like help with gas, electric and water for low- income families, as well as offer vouchers for clothing and household items to individuals and families in need.

“Eventually we will be providing utility assistance,” she said.

Berry said the proceeds from the store are used to fund the charities supported by the society.

“We send tons of money to all the other conferences,” she said.

Berry said the store is a good place to find gently used clothing and household items, but due to limited space, they are not able to sell furniture. She said the store has new things to offer every day.

“They send us a truck every week,” she said.

Because of the amount of goods coming in from the Wheeling store, Berry said they are not soliciting donations at this time.

Berry said the store has some special activities planned for its opening. There will be refreshments including hot dogs and special sales.

The store is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturdays.

For information, contact the store at (304) 737-8184.
