Hancock County Board of Education discusses committee positions

NEW CUMBERLAND — With a full board present, committee seats were discussed during Monday’s Hancock County Board of Education meeting.

Board President Michelle Chappell welcomed Larry Shaw to the board.

Chappell plans to to continue to sit on the School Board Association advisory committee, a post she has held for three years. She had offered to step down if another member wanted to sit on the committee, but no one wanted to step in.

Dan Kaser volunteered to sit on the audit committee, which is designed to select the firm that does the district’s audits.

Every three years the district gets to review its contract with the district auditor. During this review, the board has the opportunity to select a different firm.

Tim Reinard and Shaw offered to sit on the wellness committee. With only one seat empty, the board decided to have Reinard fill the opening and have Shaw attend meetings if Reinard is unavailable. Reinard will continue to sit on the 4-H Foundation committee.

The board also discussed two optional webinars about the recent changes to the state’s education legislation. There are two sessions available to the board members on Friday. For attending one or both webinars the members will receive one hour of board credits.

In other action, the board:

¯ Chappell expressed gratitude to the prevention resource officers and first responders who kept the community safe during the Aug. 14 shooting incidents, that put a soccer scrimmage at Oak Glen on lockdown as a safety precaution.

¯ Discussed the new superintendent, Dawn Petrovich’s goals for the district, which include student growth and achievement, student attendance and building safety and security. Petrovich is to have a draft of her goals prepared for the board by its next regular meeting. The board plans to vote on those goals during the Sept. 9 meeting so they can be submitted to the state by the Sept. 15 deadline.

¯ Approved the resignation of Darleen Archer as the multi-categorical/autism instructor at Weir High School.

¯ Approved unpaid days for Breanna Underwood and Sierra Blair.

¯ Approved Caitlyn Knotts as a fifth-grade teacher at Weir Middle School.

¯ Approved a lease space contact for the new alternative learning center location. The centers new space is located at 3549.5 Main St., Weirton.

The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. on Monday in the Rockefeller Career Center.
