Steubenville shooting incident leaves one dead

STEUBENVILLE — City Police are investigating an early morning shooting which claimed the life of a city man.

Police identified the victim as William R. Ross III, 24.

Officers were called around 4:10 a.m. today to the 700 block of Market Square after receiving a report that shots had been fired. Police located a scene inside Apartment C, 713 Market Square. Spent shell casings were found inside the apartment, and a back window was found open, police reported.

Officers checked the surrounding area and found Ross dead in an alley that runs along South Seventh Street, across the street from the apartment complex.

Police Chief William McCafferty said a review of security tapes showed a female exit the apartment, followed by two males who had pulled the hoods of sweatshirts onto their heads. The chief said Ross is then seen staggering out of the apartment.

Police believe another person might have exited the apartment through the back window.

Detectives are attempting to identify the people who are seen on the security tape leaving the apartment.

McCafferty said Ross wasn’t living at the apartment, and had recently been banned from the apartment complex.
